3 Steps to the Ultimate You

Today, as I sit with my third cup of coffee watching the snow fall, I contemplate life, question my place in the world, and, let’s face it – wonder what others think of me.

Let me start by saying I believe it is perfectly fine to wonder what others think of you. In fact, we should be conscious about what others see. Whether we acknowledge it or not, we are being watched. There are a million voices telling you what we should want others to see. Gorgeous hair. Sexy eyes. Quirky Instagrams that seem to say, “Look, I’m a seriously stylish, yet fun-loving beauty!”

I’ve yet to meet someone who doesn’t desire to be outwardly beautiful; but I’ve also learned that what we really want is for people to see our hearts and souls. We want to be known. I am most curious about those people who are not just looking at me, but watching me. What do they see in me? What kind of person am I? And the ever-looming question: Who am I? How can I be… drumroll, please… the ultimate me? Over time, I’ve discovered becoming the ultimate version of myself comes down to three simple steps:

 *****

The Ultimate You: A 3 Step Guide

1.  Have a little self-chat.

Be interested in yourself. What do you love? What do you hate? What makes you the saddest? What are you passionate about? What are your deepest desires? Question yourself until you are convinced you know yourself completely.

2. Acknowledge your imperfections.

You will never truly know yourself until you know your imperfections. Our imperfections make us individuals. None of us are perfect, and that is just wonderful. Take joy in the fact that you don’t have to be perfect. If we were all ‘perfect’, life would be boring… imperfect is real.

3. Talk to your Creator.

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Psalm 139:13-16 (ESV)

Who better to help you know yourself than the one who put you together? God, the creator of the Universe, also created you. He knows every little fibre of your being. Every little insignificant or profound thought that passed through your brain, He heard it. He knows why you think a certain way, or that you secretly love to organise your skittles by colour and number. (Anyone? No, just me? … Right.) He knows what your strengths and weaknesses are and how you can use them. He knows whose lives you will touch, and knows who will change yours. He knows you in every way and unconditionally loves every miniscule thing about you. His works are wonderful, and you are His best work.

So, there you have it. You are now on your way to becoming the ultimate you. If you take the time, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how quickly you start to fall in love with the person God has created you to be. Which is simply, you.
